Should I charge Taxes on my Shopify Store?

Should I charge Taxes on my Shopify Store?

Long story short, you should collect tax on the basis of state tax laws depending on which state the goods are purchased from. There are certain rules and regulations you should be aware of before you start charging tax through your dropshipping business.

Some states in the USA such as Montana, Oregon, New Hampshire, don’t require sellers to either collect or pay sales tax. The same can’t be said for the majority. Currently, 45 states collect sales tax from their merchants under the Economic nexus rule.

The tax rate and the rules you must follow can be largely different depending on the state you’re from. For example, some states expect you to charge on shipping while some don’t.

The Sales Tax Permit

As of June 21st, 2018, all online retailers who have collected $100,000 in sales or had 200 transactions have to pay sales taxes. The threshold can vary depending on the state but this is usually the starting line.

You can check the threshold for your state through online sites and apps. As the bottom line changes every year, it is your responsibility to confirm it so you don’t end up neglecting the rules.

If you have hit the threshold, it is mandatory that you register for sales tax permit. For further information on the permit, it’s best that you check the Department of Revenue website of your state.

Again, the name for the tax permit and the documents you’re required to fill vary according to the state, so it’s a better option for you to verify them yourself. Most states let you register for sales permits free of cost, but some states such as Wisconsin might deem it appropriate to charge you.

In dropshipping, how do we determine sales tax nexus? While the definition for the term differs depending on the state, most states count nexus as the physical presence you have in a state. For example, if you have a house or a warehouse in a state, you will be considered to have a nexus in that specific state.

If an order comes from a state that you have a nexus in, you need to collect sales tax. If the order doesn’t come from a state that you have a nexus in, you don’t need to charge for tax.

If you don’t have a nexus in any state, you don’t need to worry about filing for sales tax at all.

Payment Frequency

Whether you need to file for tax remittance in a year, monthly or quarterly depends on the states. The state should inform you what the payment terms are once you’ve acquired the permit.

For Shopify Sellers

Shopify has simplified the process of collecting sales tax. On your part though, you do have to learn how to set it up correctly.

Step 1- Formation Of Shipping Zones

What are the states that are covered by your store when it comes to shipping? Remember how each state has its own tax rate? It’s imperative that you create a zone for each one of them.

On your dashboard, go to Settings → Shipping. You will find the option to add the shipping zone here. You can give the zone a name, for example, the region the countries fall in and then add all the countries that you ship to.

Step 2- Set Up The Tax Rates

You can set up the automatic calculation of sales tax on Shopify. In the General section of your Settings, make sure you have your address set up based on the states you have nexus in.

Now, find the Taxes option, which is also available once you click on the settings pages. Check on automatic calculation and Shopify will manage the rate for you according to the states and tax rules applicable in the states. Whether the state charges based on origin or destination basis is also accounted for here.

Step 3- The Tax Exemptions

There are some states that have specific exemptions on certain products. You can set up the automatic calculation for it too so that when you charge your customers, you don’t accidentally end up making them pay for taxes.

On the product page, click on Collections and tap on the Create Collection button. Set up a name for the collection and save it.

Again, go back to the Taxes page and select the country the exemption applies to. In the new page, click on the Tax Overrides option and then on add a tax override.

The collections are available for you to choose from inside the dropdown menu. Choose the state the exemption is for and finish it by selecting add override.

How To Track Sales Tax

Shopify isn’t going to help you with tax filing but you do have access to reports to make the process easier. Specifically, there is the tax filing report that allows you to check on the sales tax collection during a certain period.

You simply need to select the beginning and end date of your report. The report will pull up a page with the countries you have collected tax from, the region and the states, the rate in each state and the total collection for each one of them.

Every time a transaction occurs, Shopify automatically updates this report.

The amazing use of this report is that it takes notes of the destination-based and origin-based taxes you have set up for the shipping zones. If you have made use of the automatic tax rate calculator, you can be certain the reports are completely accurate.

Taxes are a huge part of a business. Before you open a Shopify store, take your sweet time in learning and understanding the tax rules and regulations of your state. In the long run, when you do hit it big, much of the hassle surrounding taxes will be already taken care of.

Business Structure

Business Structure

If you’re starting a dropshipping business, you need to decide on a business model and structure first. Selecting the right structure isn’t just about legal formalities—it sets the foundation for how you manage and grow your business.

If you plan on collecting a good amount of profit from your business, you should set up your business as a legal entity. This not only protects your personal assets but also ensures you operate professionally and stay compliant with tax regulations.

In addition to choosing the right structure, leveraging tools like Sell The Trend can significantly streamline the process of setting up and managing your business. Its automation features and advanced AI capabilities allow you to focus on scaling your operations rather than getting bogged down by administrative tasks.

There are different types of business entities, but online retailers usually settle with one of the following three:

Sole Proprietorship

Sole Proprietorship

Sole proprietorship is the most basic business structure you can register as.

However, know that the type doesn’t offer you any personal liability protection. In the event you get sued by a customer, you may come close to losing your personal assets.

On the other hand, the tax filing required for this is basic and you only need to report the earnings when you’re filing for personal tax.

Limited Liability Company (LLC)

Limited Liability Company (LLC)

LLC or Limited Liability Company is essentially the act of setting up your online store as a business entity that is separate from you.

This ensures that in the event a customer decides to take you to court because of a misunderstanding on the quality of the product or feels cheated by you in monetary ways, the court won’t be able to make you pay for compensation by using your personal assets, only your business assets.

We can’t call the LLC foolproof, but it is better compared to a sole proprietorship in terms of personal asset protection.

You will have to file tax returns separately for your company and pay ongoing fees. You will also have to pay a fee for establishing the company. As LLCs differ from state to state it’s good to check this guide on how to form an LLC on every state.

Pro Tip: Learn everything you need to know about dropshipping with Sell The Trend’s Success Academy, from how to set up your online store to the boring stuff like personal asset protection.

Advantages of an LLC

  1. Limited Liability Protection: The primary advantage of an LLC is that it protects your personal assets from business liabilities and business debts. If your business incurs debt or is sued, only the assets owned by the LLC are at risk.
  2. Operational Flexibility: LLCs offer flexibility in terms of management and taxation. You can choose to have your LLC taxed as a sole proprietorship, partnership, S corporation, or C corporation, depending on what best suits your financial needs.
  3. Credibility: Having an LLC can enhance the credibility of your business. Customers and suppliers may view your business as more legitimate and trustworthy if it is registered as an LLC.
  4. Pass-Through Taxation: By default, an LLC is taxed as a pass-through entity, meaning the business itself does not pay federal income taxes. Instead, profits and losses are passed through to the owners’ personal tax returns, which can simplify tax reporting.

Disadvantages of an LLC

  1. Cost: Forming and maintaining an LLC comes with costs, including filing fees, annual fees, and potential legal fees. These costs vary by state.
  2. Ongoing Compliance: LLCs must adhere to certain compliance requirements, such as filing annual reports and paying ongoing fees. Failure to comply can result in penalties or the dissolution of the LLC.
  3. Limited Liability is Not Absolute: While an LLC provides liability protection, it is not foolproof. In certain situations, courts can “pierce the corporate veil” and hold LLC owners personally liable. This usually happens if the LLC is found to be engaged in fraudulent activities or if personal and business finances are not kept separate.

C Corporation

C Corporation

If you plan on getting into the dropshipping business with huge investment and expect a considerable amount of profit, you might want to look into C Corporation first.

Many companies tend to choose this option, as it seems to offer the maximum liability protection and potential tax benefits.

The incorporation is more expensive than LLC and the tax filing is doubled.

If you have an average size business like most, LLC might be your best option.

If you have enough funding from the start to pay for the incorporation and ongoing fees, we recommend going for an LLC from the start.

If that is not the case, start with a sole proprietorship and then eventually move on to an LLC.

Do You Need an LLC for Dropshipping?

How do you know when to opt for LLC though? Well, there are some factors you should take into consideration

The Scale Of Your Dropshipping Business

The Scale Of Your Business

It’s not necessary to go for an LLC if you’ve started a business recently and don’t even know whether it is going to be successful.

However, if your store has been open for some time and you’ve been seeing a steady increase in customers perhaps due to some SEO apps, you should consider it.

Good traffic isn’t enough to register for an LLC though. Your business should have some level of success.

A monthly profit margin that you can rely on so that even after you’ve filed for tax, and paid your ongoing LLC fees, you still have some profit left for further investment and for your own needs.

You can have an excellent month and you decide to opt for LLC. Don’t be hasty. See if the streak continues for some months and the profit margin stays above the line.

The Time Of Establishment of Your Dropshipping Business

The Time Of Establishment

If your business has only been around for a month or two, registering for an LLC seems a bit hasty. This ties to the first point directly.

Keep track of the progress in your business and see if your business continues to grow or at least continues at the same rate before getting an LLC.

Risk Assessment

Risk Assessment

What kind of products are you selling? Does your product come with a certain amount of risk?

Say, you’re selling electronic products and a faulty one could lead to the customer getting hurt or even worst-case scenario, setting the house on fire.

In such a situation, your customer is quite likely to sue you. If you don’t win the case, you’re going to live with the nightmarish situation of having to turn your personal assets in if the damage is too big.

In the case of businesses with risky products, you shouldn’t delay in getting an LLC.

By forming an LLC, you can protect your assets from being used to cover any business debts incurred by your dropshipping business.

The previous two points on whether your business is successful or even for a month old are unimportant.

By relying on sole proprietorship, you will be putting your house, car, jewelry, or any other personal asset on the line.

Additionally, separating personal and business finances is crucial to protect your personal assets and ensure better financial management.

EIN Number

EIN Number

To start an online business, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has made it mandatory for all businesses to get an employer identification number (EIN). This is similar to a Social Security number, but it is only applicable to the legal company.

This is the number you will have to refer to when you are filing for taxes, applying to start your dropshipping account, or opening a bank account in the name of your business.

Anything related to your business has to be done through the EIN to make sure all transactions and sales are attributed to the business.

Finances

Finances

This should be obvious but if you’re starting a dropshipping business, do not invest in it from your personal bank account or cash.

It doesn’t matter whether you create a PayPal account, bank account or need a credit card, open all those accounts separately in the name of your business rather than yours. All transactions should be made from the business account.

An LLC operating agreement is crucial for clarifying the operational structure and member responsibilities within your LLC.

While not all states require this agreement, it plays a vital role in preventing ownership disputes and facilitating clear guidelines on profit distribution and member rights.

Opening a dropshipping business isn’t as easy as people make it out to be, but sites like Shopify do offer some services to their customers such as automatic tax calculation that makes the process much easier.

Be sure to check out all the pros and cons of the business before you dip your toes in it

The Role of an Operating Agreement for a Limited Liability Company

The Role of an LLC Operating Agreement

An LLC operating agreement is a legal document that outlines the ownership structure, management responsibilities, and operational procedures of your LLC.

While not all states require an LLC operating agreement, it is highly recommended for all LLCs, including single-member LLCs.

Why You Need an LLC Operating Agreement

  1. Clarify Ownership and Management Roles: The operating agreement outlines the ownership percentages of each member, as well as their responsibilities and roles within the business. This can help prevent disputes and ensure that everyone understands their rights and obligations.
  2. Establish Procedures for Decision-Making: The operating agreement sets forth the procedures for making important business decisions, such as voting on new members, distributing profits, and resolving disputes.
  3. Protect Limited Liability Status: Having a formal operating agreement can help protect your limited liability status by demonstrating that your LLC is a separate legal entity with its own management structure and operating procedures.
  4. Facilitate Smooth Operations: The operating agreement provides clear guidelines for how the business will be run, including how profits and losses will be distributed, how meetings will be conducted, and how the business will be dissolved if necessary.

Key Components of an LLC Operating Agreement

  1. Ownership Structure: The agreement should specify the ownership percentages of each member and how ownership will be transferred in the event of a member’s death or departure.
  2. Management Roles: The agreement should outline the roles and responsibilities of each member, including who will manage the day-to-day operations of the business.
  3. Profit and Loss Distribution: The agreement should specify how profits and losses will be distributed among members. This may be based on ownership percentages or another agreed-upon formula.
  4. Voting Rights: The agreement should establish the voting rights of each member and the procedures for making important business decisions.
  5. Dispute Resolution: The agreement should outline the procedures for resolving disputes between members, including whether mediation or arbitration will be used.
  6. Dissolution Procedures: The agreement should specify the procedures for dissolving the LLC and distributing its assets if the business is terminated.

When Should You Form an LLC for Your Dropshipping Business?

When Should You Form an LLC for Your Dropshipping Business?

Deciding when to form an LLC depends on several factors, including the scale of your business, how long it has been operating, and the level of risk associated with your products. Here’s a closer look at each of these factors:

Scale of Your Business

The size and profitability of your business are crucial factors in deciding whether to form an LLC.

If your business is still in its early stages and you’re not yet generating significant revenue, it may make sense to start as a sole proprietorship.

However, as your business grows and starts generating consistent profits, the benefits of forming an LLC become more apparent.

No title
Pro Tip: Reduce customer wait times by connecting with trusted suppliers via Sell The Trend’s Supplier Database—ranked by quality, speed, and reliability.

Consistent Revenue Stream

If your dropshipping business is generating a steady stream of revenue, forming an LLC can help protect your personal assets from potential business liabilities. Look for consistent profitability over several months before deciding to form an LLC.

Financial Stability

Ensure that your business income can comfortably cover the costs associated with forming and maintaining an LLC. This includes the filing fees, annual fees, and any additional taxes that may be required.

Growth Potential

If you have plans to scale your business, such as expanding your product line, entering new markets, or hiring employees, an LLC provides the legal framework needed to support growth while protecting your personal assets.

Time of Establishment

The age of your business is another important consideration. If your business is still in its infancy, it may be premature to form an LLC.

However, if your business has been operating for several months and is showing signs of growth, it may be time to consider forming an LLC.

Track Record of Success

Before forming an LLC, track your business’s performance over time. If your business has consistently generated revenue and you have a clear growth trajectory, it may be a good time to formalize your business structure with an LLC.

Seasonal Trends

Consider the impact of seasonal trends on your business. If your dropshipping business experiences significant fluctuations in revenue throughout the year, it may be wise to wait until you have a better understanding of your business’s long-term performance before forming an LLC.

Risk Assessment

The level of risk associated with your products is another critical factor in deciding when to form an LLC.

Dropshipping businesses that sell high-risk products, such as electronics, health supplements, or products with safety concerns, should prioritize forming an LLC to protect against potential legal liabilities.

  • High-Risk Products
  • Product Liability Insurance
  • Legal Environment

FAQs

Do you need an LLC to dropship?

An LLC provides liability protection, separating your personal assets from business liabilities, and adds credibility to your business.

How much is an LLC for dropshipping?

The cost of forming an LLC varies by state, ranging from $50 to $500 in filing fees. Additionally, some annual fees and taxes can range from $50 to several hundred dollars depending on your state. Other potential costs include legal fees for setting up your LLC and any optional services you might use to streamline the process.

What licenses are needed for dropshipping?

In most cases, you will need a sales tax permit and an Employer Identification Number (EIN). Other specific licenses or permits may depend on your state, city, or the type of products you’re selling.

What type of LLC for online business?

For most online businesses, including dropshipping, a single-member LLC is sufficient. If you have business partners, a multi-member LLC might be more appropriate, with an operating agreement to define roles and responsibilities.

Do I need an LLC to start a dropshipping business?

No, you don’t need an LLC to start dropshipping. You can operate as a sole proprietorship in the beginning, which is faster and less expensive.

Conclusion

Starting a dropshipping business can be exciting and rewarding, but it also comes with legal and financial responsibilities.

Choosing the right business structure is one of the most important decisions.

While a sole proprietorship may be sufficient in the early stages of your business, forming an LLC provides essential protection for your personal assets and offers operational flexibility.

When deciding whether to form an LLC, consider the scale of your business, the time it has been operating, and the level of risk associated with your products.

If your business is generating consistent revenue, has been operating for several months, and involves selling high-risk products, forming an LLC is likely the best choice.

Additionally, separating your personal and business finances, obtaining an EIN number, and creating an LLC operating agreement are crucial steps to ensure the long-term success and protection of your dropshipping business.

By taking these steps, you can focus on growing your business with the confidence that your personal assets are protected and that your business is operating within the legal framework.

Remember, while forming an LLC is an important step, it is not the only consideration when starting and running a successful dropshipping business.

Product Images

The pictures of the products you are selling make a significant difference. Low quality and unclear images of products don’t appeal to the customers.

Therefore, you need to have attractive photos of the product that clearly show the customers what they are buying and, in fact, can attract the customers to buy your product.

Providing Customer Support

Providing Customer Support

One of the critical factors in dropshipping is to provide excellent customer service. While this is easily handled on a website, without a website, you should be active in replying to any customer queries.

This would not only help build trust with the customers but would also establish your credibility.

Customers would be comfortable buying from a seller who is approachable, active, and ready to answer any queries. This could also set you apart from the competition.

Keep up with Trends and Analytics

Ecom Influencer: Chris Wane

Chris Wane is a highly successful Entrepreneur and Online Coach based in the UK. His start in the ecom space was fast and big as he made his first $15,000 in the first 6 weeks of launching his first ever product. After a few failed attempts at dropshipping he has now been able to generate over $700,000 from his stores. In an effort to spread his growing knowledge, Chris is also a successful educator with his own Advanced Dropshipping Academy Course. We are lucky to have Chris with us to do an interview for Sell The Trend.

STT: When did you start out in ecom?

CWI first started about 4 years ago but I wasn’t really that focussed on it, it was just more of a side thing. It was just over 2 years ago when I really started to put all my effort into making it work and then 6 weeks later I hit my first $15,000.

STT: When did you have your first big success/winning product? what was the product?

CW My first big success came with one of the first products I launched on my general store. It was with a pair of cycling glasses and I managed to generate over $180,000 with that one product.

STT: How much did you make on your first winning product?

CWThe cycling glasses generated $180,000 in sales over a 4 month period. After advertising and product costs my profit was around $43,200 (24%). It could have been a lot higher looking back because my knowledge of dropshipping and Facebook advertising has grown substantially since, I definitely left a lot of money on the table!

STT: Did you buy any toy/toys with your earnings?

CW: Over the entire time I’ve been dropshipping I’ve earnt enough to pay off my car and mortgage so I’m pretty happy with that but I’ve never really been someone who wants flashy toys as such. The most expensive thing I’ve bought myself was a 3 week road trip from New York to LA. It’s always been a dream of mine to do a coast to coast road trip so that was really the only thing I wanted to buy!

STT: Were there any hard moments/times before you made your breakthrough that you would like to share?

CWYeah, all the time! It took 5 failed stores attempts to even make my first sale but I was really passionate about making it work so I spent all my free time learning everything that I could so I could be successful with it. Even after I started making consistent profits I still made mistakes early on. I lost over $3,000 in one weekend because I did something wrong within Facebook. That mistake is one of the main reasons why I tell people to learn how to do this rather than try and figure it out on your own. Having a tutor who can show you how to advertise the right way can stop you making the same mistakes I did and save you thousands of dollars in the process.

STT: I saw the awesome video you did on Sell The Trend.  What’s your favorite part or feature of our app?

CWI really like how you can see the orders trend over time and also what the actual value of the sales are. The interest targeting suggestions are also really useful for people who are just getting started because knowing what to target is always tricky when you first start dropshipping.

STT: What is something that most people don’t know about you and they would be surprised to find out?

CW: I was recently travelling back from Budapest and my plane fell 24,000 feet in under two minutes and had to make an emergency landing because of engine issues. Funny thing is, I didn’t have a clue it was happening. I was watching Two and a Half Men on my phone with my headphones in and didn’t feel or notice the panic that was going on around me until we were about to land.

STT: What does a typical day in your week look like?

CWA typical day for me would be to wake up around 8am, respond to any emails or messages from my students, check my stores, check my ad accounts, respond to any Youtube comments and generally just complete any business admin. I’ve usually finished for about 12pm so after that I’ll either be on a few coaching calls with my students, focusing on creating new content for my Advanced Dropshipping Academy or looking for new products to sell to grow my business even further.

STT: What do you like to do when you are not working?

CWI like to do very little in my free time so I usually just sit around and watch TV series or play a few games of FIFA on the Playstation. I’m a firm believer in giving yourself time to recharge so you can be at your best when you need to be, so doing nothing is a perfect way for me to relax.

STT: What is the most important piece of advice you can give to new entrepreneurs starting out today?

CWMake sure you fully understand everything you’re getting involved in before you do. It’s very easy to be drawn into the big numbers you see people talk about but behind the scenes there is a lot of work and a lot of effort that goes into making it work. If you’re still serious about making it work then make sure you get someone to show you how to do it properly, whether that’s by enrolling in my academy or someone else’s, because it will save you thousands of dollars in mistakes if you do.

STT: What are you plans for the next 2, 5, 10 years… what is your future vision for your business?

CWMy main focus will be launching a few stores that I can brand for longevity rather than focusing on quick wins. I’ll also be looking to grow my academy even further because there’s something strangely rewarding seeing other people become successful from techniques I’ve taught them! However, the ultimate goal will be to get to a point where I can retire early. I’m only 31 so if I can retire by the time I’m 40 I’ll be happy with that so the main focus is going to be trying to create as many independent income streams as I can so I can enjoy the rest of my life!

STT: Anything new you are working on that you are excited about?

CWI’ve just launched version 2.0 of my Advanced Dropshipping Academy which brings the content in line with the current algorithms of Facebook as well as my own improved strategy when it comes to Facebook advertising. I’m also just about to launch a brand new one product store just in time for Q4 and the big holiday season so hopefully that will be a nice little earner in time for Christmas.

Terminology You Need to Know

Sales Tax Nexus: Sales tax nexus refers to the connection between your business and a state that requires you to collect sales tax.

Tax Exemption Certificate: This certificate allows dropshippers to purchase inventory without paying sales tax upfront, provided the goods are resold to customers. This helps prevent double taxation.

Consumption Tax: This is a tax imposed on goods and services at the point of purchase. In the United States, sales tax is a common form of consumption tax collected at the state or local level.

Tax Liability: Your liability is the total amount of taxes you owe, including income taxes, sales taxes, and other applicable levies. It’s crucial to calculate your liability accurately to avoid penalties.

Dropshipping taxes can get technical, but you will get used to it. Now, to stay compliant with legal requirements, you need to pay sales tax and pay income tax.

Pay Sales Tax: How it Works

Pay Sales Tax: How it Works

When running a dropshipping business, one of the biggest questions is how to pay sales tax. Simply put, sales tax is a consumption rate that customers pay when purchasing goods or services, which businesses must collect and remit to their state or local governments. Different states have different sales tax rates.

The concept of sales tax nexus is essential here. If your business has a physical or economic presence in a state, you are required to collect sales tax from customers in that state. However, many states now impose sales tax collection requirements even on businesses without a physical presence, making compliance more of a hassle.

Traditionally, nexus was established through a physical presence, such as having an office, warehouse, or employees in a particular state. However, the rules surrounding it have changed multiple times, especially after the 2018 Wayfair vs. South Dakota Supreme Court decision.

Today, many states have adopted an economic nexus model. This means you may need to pay sales tax even if you don’t have a physical presence but exceed a specific sales or transaction threshold in that state. For example:

States like California and Texas now enforce economic nexus laws. In California, you need to pay only if your sales exceed $500,000 annually in the state. Similarly, Texas has a $500,000 sales threshold but requires compliance with additional local tax rules.

Some countries are banking on dropshipping taxes but some still lag behind. We recommend checking the laws in your territory before paying taxes. If not easily accessible, seek professional advice.

Sounds complicated? Sell The Trend has an efficient solution for your online business, the SellShop platform. Our platform can basically automate the entire process. You don’t have to calculate manually, the Auto Tax feature simplifies the process by automatically applying default tax values once the user inputs their state registration code. So, if you are willing to learn about taxes but still want a platform to streamline the actual work, check out the SellShop platform.

Pay Income Tax: How it Works

Pay Income Tax: How it Works

In addition to sales tax, every dropshipper is required to pay income taxes on their profits. Your profits are considered taxable income and must be reported to both federal and state tax authorities.

The US government collects federal income tax, while individual states have their own rules for income taxes. The income tax rate may range from minimal to substantial. Dropshippers situated elsewhere only pay a federal income tax or nothing at all.

Many dropshippers attempt to lower their tax liability by claiming losses or deducting business expenses. However, it’s crucial to do this accurately to avoid complications during an audit. Filing income tax payments regularly helps you stay compliant and avoid penalties.

For new dropshippers, understanding how to calculate and file pay income tax can feel overwhelming. Consulting a tax professional or using accounting software tailored for e-commerce can streamline the process, ensuring your business adheres to all applicable tax laws.

Tax Exemptions and Certificates for Dropshipping Businesses

Tax Exemptions and Certificates for Dropshipping Businesses

Tax exemptions can save dropshippers significant amounts. Here are some things we think you should know.

What is a Sales Tax Exemption Certificate?

This certificate allows businesses to purchase goods from suppliers without paying sales tax upfront, provided the goods will be resold. It helps avoid double taxation in the supply chain.

Who Qualifies for a Tax Exemption?

Dropshippers qualify if: You’re purchasing inventory exclusively for resale(with a resale certificate). You’re registered to collect sales tax in your state or other states where you sell.

How to Obtain the Certificate?

  • Step 1: Register your online business with your state’s tax authority to receive a tax ID.
  • Step 2: Complete the application (available online in most states).
  • Step 3: Provide your supplier with the certificate when making purchases.

When to Use Exemption Certificates?

Always present your certificate when buying inventory for resale. If selling to tax-exempt organizations or customers in states without sales taxes, you may also qualify for exemptions.

Is Dropshipping Worth It?

Is Dropshipping Worth It?

A quick and straightforward answer to that is, Yes Dropshipping is worth it. But it is not as simple as it may seem. It is only worth it if you are determined, persistent, have some budget, an entrepreneurial drive, and eagerness to learn.

If you’re new to the dropshipping business and thinking how a business model with little investment, no inventory, direct shipping to customers, is still profitable and worth it? Well, over the past years, this business model has seen a massive rise. Many entrepreneurs, e-commerce enthusiasts, newbies have jumped on to this business and have made it even more competitive.

For someone new, it is very easy to start a dropshipping business. There is so many information, guidelines available that it seems very easy to do. But with an increase in competition over the past couple of years, it has become too competitive to sustain at a small scale.

It is because of this reason that many people are questioning if it is a good business model or if it’s worth it still.

Things about Dropshipping You Should Know

Before going into many details, here are a few things you should know about dropshipping which are essential to understand where this business model stands

  • It is not easy

Dropshipping business is not easy. It may come as a surprise, but it’s a fact. No matter how much information is available on the subject, or how many gurus make it look simple and easy, it is not.

As a matter of fact, no business is easy. Everything requires, patience, persistence, learning, failing, making improvements, and above all, determination to succeed. So, if you’re thinking setting up an online store is all it takes to succeed and make you rich, you’re wrong. The competition in the market is high, and only opening a store is not enough.

  • Learning is the Key

As mentioned in point 1, merely opening a store is not enough. In order to succeed in online business or any business, continuous learning is the key. Understanding the trends, analytics, market competition, and customer needs are essential to learning if you want to be successful with dropshipping. You need to learn how to do it and do it right.

  • Don’t be overwhelmed by the hype

If you’ve been intrigued by the numbers and money made facts shown by few people online, then you’re not thinking correctly. While it may be true for some people to have made huge money out of this business in days, it’s not a norm (could still be true).

Spending a significant amount on ads and then getting a five-figure return is not how you do this business or make money out of it.

  • It is still a profitable business

With so many people entering the e-commerce industry and dropshipping, it has become highly competitive, but it’s not saturated. You can still make a significant profit from this business.

Amazon started as the first dropshipping company. Considering Amazon’s size today, it is quite evident that there are opportunities for others to enter this business and be profitable too. The key here is to source quality products at a cost-effective price. And with platforms like Shopify and marketing platforms like Facebook Ads, there will always be opportunities to sell online.

How to be successful with Dropshipping

Dropshipping would not have been this popular if nobody made money out of it. Like any business, it is hard work, but it eventually pays off.

It can be a profitable business if done correctly, and it can help you make significant money with a minimum initial investment. It is not simple, as others may want to make you believe, but this should not put you off from trying.

As the industry has become more competitive, it needs more hard work than before to be successful. Here are the key points that will help clear any doubts you have about the dropshipping business model.

  • Low upfront investment

Most businesses fail even before they are established because of the high initial investment. Fortunately, with the dropshipping business model, there is a low upfront investment to set up an online store. With no need to keep inventory, deliver products, hire staff, you can start from anywhere, all you need is internet access.

The only investment you make is on a website/online store, or a portal to take customer orders, a software to coordinate with suppliers, and that is it.
